The Amsterdam University Fund believes it is important that everyone who wants to gain experience abroad during their studies gets the opportunity to do so. Thanks to the support of our donors, UvA students who do not have the means to make this possible can apply for a one-off student travel grant.
More information about the student travel grant
  • For whom
    1. You are going abroad for an exchange, research, internship or fieldwork as part of your UvA studies and thus earn credits.
    2. Without financial support, the experience abroad would not be possible for you, because you and your parents/guardians do not have sufficient resources to cover the costs. This requires an advice letter from a student counselor.*
    3. It is your first study experience abroad. This means that students from abroad (who are already gaining experience abroad by studying at the UvA) are excluded from participation (with the exception of refugees).
  • These are the conditions

    See here for more information.

    Checks that are part of the assessment include whether you are entitled to a supplementary grant from DUO, whether you have used up your right to student financing including loan rights, and/or whether there are other circumstances that make financial support necessary. See here for an example of the advice form. Please note: there may be a waiting period of 2-3 weeks to make an appointment at Student Services, so please take this into account and timely contact them.

    For initial advice, you can contact the advisors at the International Office of your faculty. You can also call Student Services for an initial assessment of whether you are eligible (daily consultation hours from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, tel: 020 525 9297).

    The travel grant is not intended to cover everything, but rather forms a contribution to the total reasonable costs of the experience abroad. The available budget determines the amount of the awards and whether awards can be made. Travel grant awards will generally be between €2,500 and €5,000. The maximum of what can be requested is €10,000 (in exceptional cases).

  • Apply

    An application can be submitted via this AUF website.

    Please note: We are working with a new BenefactorCloud application system. If you encounter any problems, please send an email to subsidieaanvragen-auf@uva.nl.

    Every two months there is an application deadline for an award round. We will attempt to inform you of the decision within two to three weeks after the deadline. Please bear in mind that, if a travel grant is awarded, payment will take place after we have received proof of departure, in the form of your travel ticket and (if not already submitted with your application) a final confirmation of admission from the university, institution or organization welcoming you.

  • Checklist for your application

    Submit the application with all documents (PDF files only) via the application form. The form is in English, the answers and text in the files may also be in Dutch. These are the documents to include for your application:

    • your motivation letter dated and addressed to the Amsterdam University Fund), in which you clarify the added value and goals of the study experience abroad and explain the need for receiving a travel grant;
    • a recent CV;
    • an overview of your study results;
    • a letter of recommendation from a teacher or study advisor tailored to you (either on UvA letterhead and signed, or an email that was evidently sent from the email address of the teacher or study advisor);
    • an advice letter from a student counselor, which clearly shows a financial shortfall that cannot be bridged without a travel grant;
    • a specified budget (download the format here). If the advice letter already contains a sufficiently specified budget, there is no need to add a separate budget;
    • proof of admission from the university/institution/organization welcoming you, or a document showing that you will be admitted.
  • Upon your return

    Within a month of returning home, we would like to receive a travel report in BenefactorCloud, with the following elements:

    • the purpose of the trip (exchange, research, internship or fieldwork) and its results;
    • the academic added value of the trip;
    • to what extent the trip met your objectives/expectations;
    • what your follow-up plans are.

    The report does not have to be more than two A4 pages or 1,000 words. In addition to your travel report, we would also like to receive a number of photos of you during your trip. Send the photos as high-resolution JPG files (file larger than 1 MB). If we plan to use one of your photos for our website, online newsletter or other publications, we will first ask for your permission. We do not offer compensation for the use of photos.
